Two are dead after an apparent murder-suicide Sunday night at a northern Washington County residence.
William Woodford, 52, and his 58-year-old mother-in-law, Phyllis Tarter, both of Washington County were pronounced dead early Sunday morning. Autopsies are pending at the State Medical Examiner’s office in Frankort, but investigators say it’s possible Woodford shot Tarter before killing himself.
At approximately 10:16 p.m. Sunday Springfield Police Department received a call in reference to a man threatening suicide at a residence on Brush Grove Road, about 12 miles north of Springfield. As deputies were responding, a second call was received at approximately 10:28 p.m., according to reports from dispatchers. The caller reported someone had been shot in the residence.
Woodford’s wife, Debbie, and his 17-year-old stepson fled the residence to a neighbor’s home and were not injured, police said. Deputies, troopers and members of the Kentucky State Police Special Response Team responded to the scene. They found Woodford and Tarter dead about 3:39 a.m. Monday.
The case is still under investigation, according to reports from state police.
