Church signs

-A A +A
By Ken Begley

I always love quotes and one-liners. Don’t you?
Do you ever stop at those racks in stores filled with funny greeting cards?  You’ll see me stop and read about 20 of them even when I don’t need one.  So that makes me a sucker for church signs. You know the ones with the quick quote that catches your eyes as you drive by a church.  Sometimes they’re funny.  Sometimes they make you think.  I’ve actually got five church signs staked out and look to see if they have been changed every time I drive by.  They’re the Temple Baptist Church and the New Beginnings Church on Perryville Road, the Methodist, the Christian, and the Presbyterian Church on Springfield’s Main Street, and finally the Springfield Baptist Church on Lincoln Park Road.  Yep, they never go unread by me.
So what I’ve done this week is listed a collection of some of the best church sign quotes that I’ve heard or seen. I hope you like them.

Don’t confuse God’s patience with his final response.

Been taken for granted?  Imagine how God feels.

No one can ignore Jesus forever.

Questioning God? He made the brain cells you think with.

God will let you get away with it, until suddenly . . .

Need a new life? God accepts trade-ins.

When God saw you – It was love at first sight.

Sin: it seemed like a good idea at the time.

Life – your only chance.  Eternity – payback time.

Unlock the mysteries of God. Jesus is the key.

Hurting?  No one understands like Jesus.

Famous last words: I did it my way.

God weeps for you.

Jesus: He’s holding your atoms together.

Does it hurt when people don’t trust you?  Imagine how God feels.

Hell!  . . . I’d forgotten about that!

Just when you thought it was safe to ignore God . . .

People ignore God and then blame him for the chaos that results.

Jesus: beaten so that you could be unbeatable.

There’s more hope for murderers than the self-righteous.

You can fool yourself. You can never fool God.

Society’s rejects have a special place in God’s heart.

Have you made God smile today?

There is more. There is Jesus.

The real God: don’t settle for substitutes.

It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish that counts.

Uninspired by Jesus? Bet you’ve never met him!

Jesus: All roads lead to tragedy – except one.

Jesus welcomes you back.

Jesus: stripped, abused, assaulted, violated . . . for you.

God makes it, we mess it.

No one knows the pain of rejected love like Jesus.

You don’t have to be brain-dead to live for Jesus, but when you are, you’ll be glad you did.

God is bigger than any church.

You can no more outgrow your need for God than you can outgrow your need for oxygen.

How impersonal God seems is a measure of the distance you have put between yourself and God.

Life: the ball’s in your court.  Afterlife: it’s God’s turn.

It will work out perfectly – if you let Jesus take control.

Life: the time God gives you to determine how you spend eternity.

Forgiveness is not automatic.

Cold comfort: being as good as the next guy.

Jesus: the human face of God.

Been falsely accused of the most awful things?  Then you know how God feels.

God: so personal that in comparison we are cold unfeeling.

Have you kept your promise to God?

Lust and selfishness do not equal love.

Your pain touches God’s heart.

You think life is full of surprises? Wait till you die!

Every good thing you have ever enjoyed comes from God.

To ignore God is the height of selfishness.

Jesus: He’s coming.  Justice: It’s coming.

Better to face the truth now, than after death.

Hell! I thought it didn’t matter what you believed as long as you were sincere!

God owns you, and every molecule you have ever touched.

You’ve achieved nothing until you find God.

People disappoint. God doesn’t.

Life’s most exciting adventure: intimacy with God.

There’s hope. There’s God.

Mad at God? Sure you’ve got the right person?

Turn the despair of being alone into the wonder of being alone with God.

The Bible: More up-to-date than tomorrow’s newspaper.

You’ve never cried alone. Jesus: always there.

Finally, here’s my favorite all-time quote, but you have to look it up in the bible to see what it is.  You’ll find it in the gospel of John at chapter 3, verse 16.
