The Washington County boys’ golf team wrapped up the 2009 regular season last week and finished with a strong 16-8 record.
During the season, the team finished runners-up in the All “A” Regionals, placed 12th in the Garrard County Invitational Tournament, came in fifth in the Heartland Conference Tournament and 19th in the Marion County Invitational.
All season long, the number-one player for the Commanders has been Aaron Spalding, who qualified for the boys’ state gold tournament later this year. In nine-hole matches, Spalding has averaged just under 40.
Head boys’ golf coach Paul Bodenhamer said the team’s most improved player is Blake Smith.
“He’s solidified his place as our number four man over the past several weeks,” said Bodenhamer. “Blake has made tremendous improvements in his ball striking and his ability to work his way around the golf course.”
Another player who has made significant improvement is Jared Kelty. Kelty worked his way into the fifth spot of regionals, which began this past Tuesday.
Bodenhamer said the team’s number two and number three players are Chris Spalding and Travis Smith respectively.
“Both guys have been fairly solid all year long,” Bodenhamer added. “The boys are working to have three scores in the 70s and two in the low 80s for the regional tournament.”
