Athletics can take its toll on the grades of student athletes, but for a select few teams at St. Catharine College excellence in the classroom comes natural. In 2013 the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) posted the opportunity for teams to apply for an academic award that is based upon the team grade point average rather than individual classroom performance.
In order to qualify for the award, the entire varsity roster for the sport in question must have maintained a 3.0 GPA for the 2012-2013 academic year. This year five Patriot squads maintained not only the minimum requirement for the team grade point average, but excelled above the mark by nearly half a grade point.
The recipients of this distinguished award were Volleyball, Women’s Soccer, Men’s Golf, Women’s Golf, and Softball.
“This is an honor for our programs and a goal that all of our teams can reach. Next year we hope that the number grows from five and will keep growing in the future” said Athletic Director Tom Bystrek.
The student athletes will begin their journey once again to qualify for all academic based awards when classes resume at St. Catharine College Aug. 12.
