Thursday was the last day of school for Washington County students, but for the students and staff at Fredericktown Elementary School, the words “last day” took on a new meaning.
Fredericktown Elementary observed the final day in its history as part of the Washington County School System following the announcement last March that the school would be closed permanently due to economic reasons and the low enrollment at the school.
School board members voted in March of 2008 that if enrollment at Fredericktown did not reach 90 students in the 2008-09 school year, then that would be the final year for the school. The announcement was made official at an October 2008 school board meeting, when enrollment was at 75 students. As of the final day of school last Thursday, enrollment stood at 70 students, according to Kristie Broaddus, who served as head teacher and principal at Fredericktown.
