Get outdoors during warm weather

-A A +A
By Roberta Hunt

The warmer weather this week will certainly give everyone a chance to get outdoors and get moving whether it be for yard or home cleanup, taking a walk or jog, or just enjoying the sunshine.  Families can certainly use the time to make a list of activities to do outside instead of watching TV.  Other tips for “taming the tube”: get the TV out of the bedroom, set limits as to the time TV is watched and what programs are allowed to be watched.  If families watch TV together, then the opportunity is there to discuss the shows and the advertising taking place.
Another way to get moving as spring approaches is to involve the entire family in the household chores.  Not only will they go faster, but children will also learn responsibility and the value of helping around the house at an early age.  Kids especially love to help in the kitchen.   Let them help with easy food preparations, especially healthy snacks.  Here is a simple recipe for Crunchy Fruit Yogurt.
2 cups low-fat yogurt, plain or vanilla
1 cup fruit, fresh or canned, drained
1 cup dry crunchy cereal (granola type)
Mix yogurt and fruit together in a mixing bowl.
Spoon into 4 cereal bowls
Top each with 1/4 cup crunchy cereal
Teaching children to measure with a simple recipe will help them to learn to read recipes correctly and prepare them for more complicated food preparation in the future.  A publication on measuring is available upon request from the Washington County Extension Office.
With the snow days and missed club meetings, several deadlines for 4-H activities have been extended.  The 4-H Poetry contest deadline has been extended through March 22nd.  Rules and registration form is available from the Extension Office.  4-H members wanting to complete a woodworking or electric project may still order kits through March 15th.  All 4-H projects can be entered in the 4-H Youth Fair that is scheduled for April 29th and 30that the Extension office.
The 4-H Young Riders will meet on Monday, February 21st, 7:00 p.m. at the Extension Office.  The Best Sewers in Town 4-H Club will meet on Saturday, February 26th, 9:00 a.m. at the Extension office.
