A Washington County grand jury returned indictments against five people last week.
Ryan Lynn Dean, 20, of 3106 Harrodsburg Road, was charged with nine counts following an alleged attack on his wife.
According to a report from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, Dean allegedly attacked Mary Elizabeth Fleener on April 30. The report states that a third party contacted the sheriff’s office, telling deputies that Fleener was beaten on a regular basis by Dean. Deputies went to the address given and found Fleener with marks all over her, including her face, head, legs, arms and hands. She also had bruises that appeared to have been there a while, according to the report. She also had a large scar on her left arm, and told deputies Dean had cut her arm three weeks ago with a machete so that she could go to the hospital and get pain pills that he could sell. Deputy Billy Mattingly said Dean also told him the same information.
Fleener told deputies that Dean had hit her while the two were in a Harrodsburg store before returning to their Washington County home, and Dean also confirmed that information, according to the report. She said Dean started punching her in the face, and when they returned home, she said he threw a clock at her, striking her in the forehead. She told deputies he then picked up a hammer and struck her several times with the wooden handle, and also kicking her. Later, while Fleener was on the phone with her sister, Dean allegedly wrapped a cord around her neck and held a machete to her throat, threatening to kill her if she told what happened.
While being interviewed, Fleener also told deputies of other alleged abuse from Dean, which started as early as June 2008. According to her statements, Dean beat Fleener, punching her in the face, beating her with a belt, a broomstick and other items.
Dean is charged with five counts of assault in the 2nd Degree - domestic violence (Class C Felonies), one count of intimidating a witness (Class D Felony), one count of assault in the 4th Degree (Class A Misdemeanor) and two counts of terroristic threatening in the 3rd Degree (Class A Misdemeanors). Dean is lodged in the Marion County Detention Center on a $75,000 cash-only bond.

Editor’s note: An indictment is not a determination of guilt, but only indicates that a grand jury found enough evidence for a case to proceed to trial.
