The St. Catharine College 18th annual Celebrity Golf Classic was held Saturday at Lincoln Homestead State Park and by all accounts was the best tournament ever.

“It was a tremendous success,” said Angela Hoffman, director of events and alumni at St. Catharine. “We had the full complement of teams, beautiful weather and everyone seemed to really enjoy themselves.”

The enjoyment started Friday with the auction and reception held at the Spalding Student and Community Center on campus. Those attending had a chance to choose their favorite celebrity for their team and also to bid on a wide variety of auction items. “We had a Hawaiian theme for this year’s reception which went over really well,” added Hoffman.

Another theme that was different for this year was the unseating of the Joe Jones team that had won five of the last six years. The new champion was the Snappy Tomato Pizza quintet of Jim Mohr, Jenny Dunn, Ed Mudd, Josh Reece and Chris McMillen. Their 19-under par bettered the Jones team who finished second at 16-under par. Simms and Montgomery also finished at 16-under but took third place as determined by a scorecard playoff.

Nally and Haydon was the low net winner at 23 under par after subtracting their handicap. BB & T was second low net at 22-under par while Odell Construction was third at 21-under.

But the real winners will be the students at St. Catharine College who benefited from the event. College President Bill Huston estimated the event brought in close to six figures for the school’s scholarship fund. “Angela (Hoffman) and the entire advancement team did a great job again in making this one of the best events of its type in Kentucky,” said Huston.

Robbie Polin, who has chaired the tournament committee for 12 years also termed the event a huge success.

"Myra Blandford did a great job of organizing the many volunteers it takes. I want to thank all of those volunteers as well as all of the celebrities who played. Bobby’s (Bartholomai) staff at the golf course did a great job as always. We also appreciate the Cattlemen’s Association who provided the delicious lunch again this year.”
