Howard named MSC player of the week

St. Catharine senior Janae Howard is the Mid-South Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, conference officials announced on Monday.

The MSC weekly honor is Howard’s first this season and of her career.

Howard averaged 21.5 points and 5.5 rebounds last week while leading the Patriots to home wins over UVa.-Wise and Pikeville.

The Owensboro native nearly averaged a point a minute in St. Catharine’s 69-59 win over UVa.-Wise on Thursday. Howard ended the game with 26 points in 27 minutes while adding five rebounds, two assists and two steals. She made 8-of-12 shots from the field, including 4-for-5 from beyond the 3-point arc.

On Saturday, Howard scored 17 points and grabbed six rebounds in the Patriots’ 93-64 win over Pikeville. She added two more assists and three steals in the win.

For the week, Howard shot 52 percent (13-of-52) from the field and 44.4 percent (4-of-9) from the free throw line. She made 13 of her 15 free throw attempts.

Howard is averaging 17.7 points and 6.2 rebounds per game this season.

With last week’s wins, St. Catharine is 16-7 overall and 10-6 in the Mid-South.

The next women’s basketball player of the week award is scheduled to be announced on Monday, Feb. 18.
