Washington County boys’ basketball will have a new face on the sidelines this season, with the addition of Paul Howard as the coach of the freshman team.
Howard, a 1984 graduate of Washington County High School, played college basketball at Campbellsville and spent six seasons at St. Augustine Middle School in Lebanon as the girls’ athletic director, basketball coach and volleyball coach.
“I haven’t coached for about eight years, but I’ve been talking to Russell about it and I’ve been interested in getting back into it,” Howard said.
Howard attributed an open schedule to this being the right time to return to coaching.
“Both of my daughters have gone to college and I have some extra time,” he said. “I miss it and it’s like I’ve told several of the kids already, I don’t know any of these kids, so I want all of them to come out give it a shot.”
Without any pre-existing knowledge of the incoming freshmen, Howard will have six weeks to get his team ready for the season.
“All I’ve tried to do is encourage the kids to come out and try, and as freshman the goal will be to get them ready for varsity,” he said.
The freshman team’s first game is scheduled for Nov. 29 and Howard said he’s ready for the opportunity.
“I’m tickled to death,” he said. “I had some nerves when I came in here (Monday) afternoon (for the first practice), but I’m excited about it. I love it.”
