From Left Field

Well, here it is a new year and a slightly new look to the sports section. Editor/General Manager Jeff Moreland recently told me that the start of the new year would be a good time to change some things around and to see what we could come up with for the paper. So he locked me in a padded cell with no food or water and told me not to come out until I had some ideas. Ok, I’m slightly kidding – he did give me bread and water.

I thought some things needed to be added to make the sports front page a little more user-friendly. What you hold in your hand is the result of my hours of toiling and suffering in front of a computer screen.

So let me take you on the grand tour of the new sports front page. We’ll start at the top and work our way down the page. Everyone line up single-file, spit out your gum and keep your hands inside the ride at all times!

The top right side of the front page now features a teaser section where you can find content on the inside of the section.

Next, on the left side of the page, we have district standings for Washington County High School athletics. I thought it would be a good idea to keep track of WC’s district standings. Below the district standings section is a scoreboard with the latest scores from WC and other teams that may be of interest. This section may float around week to week, but it is intended to always be somewhere on the front, above the fold, easily accessible when you flip to the sports section.

The bulk of the front page will still be the latest sports news from around Washington County.

As we near the end of our tour, you will notice a weekly sports schedule located at the bottom of the page. This is where you can see who is playing where during the coming week.

I would like to thank Jeff Moreland for his confidence in letting me put my personal stamp on the sports section. It’s like moving into a new home or apartment and finally getting a chance to decorate things the way I like them.
