Brandon Mattingly, a sports and news writer at The Springfield Sun since October 2011, was recently promoted to the position of editor.
He said he’s looking forward to the opportunity, and taking on a larger role within Washington County.

“I’ve really gotten to know the community pretty well over the last two years, but my objective is going to be to take that to another level to find out what stories in Washington County have yet to be told,” Mattingly said.

General Manager Shorty Lassiter said Mattingly is ready to take on an expanded role.

“I couldn’t be happier with the job Brandon has done for us, particularly while short-staffed for much of this year,” Lassiter said. “He’s answered the bell no matter what was asked of him.”

Mattingly, a Marion County native, graduated from the University of Kentucky school of journalism in 2011, before spending two months as a part-time reporter with The Kentucky Standard. He then joined the staff at The Sun, where he’s since covered sports and news. He said his vision for the paper hasn’t changed.

“I’ve always tried to produce a newspaper that embraces the community, keeps them informed about the things that are important to them and is enjoyable to flip through every week,” Mattingly said. “My goal is to continue what has made this a great publication in the past, while doing whatever I can to make it even better in the future.”

Mattingly added that he had no idea what was in store following his college education, but that he’s thankful for being embraced by Washington County.

“I was lucky to get an opportunity at The Sun right out of college because it’s so close to home and has provided me an avenue to jumpstart my journalism career,” he said. “Washington County has been great to me. The people here have been available with open arms for anything I’ve needed, and I can’t wait to establish even stronger roots here.”
