By Special to The Sun

The Washington County Public Library “recognizes the power of information and the joy of discover” by “providing a variety of quality resources and programs.”  To perform this mission, we are eager to announce our latest efforts to bring the community the newest electronic resources.

• Freegal Music - A free music service from your library. All you need is your library card number and PIN to have access to 7 million songs, including Sony Music’s catalog of legendary artists. In total the collection is comprised of music from over 28,000 labels with music that originates in over 80 countries. There is no software to download, and there are no digital rights management (DRM) restrictions. You can have three downloads for free a week and create your own playlists. The site is set up to easily browse or search for your favorite music or artist. It is completely free with an updated Washington County Public Library card. Freegal is available beginning July 5.

• TumbleBook – An online collection of TumbleBooks — animated, talking picture books, which teach kids the joy of reading in a format they’ll love — is also now available. Existing picture books have animation, sound, music and narration added to produce an electronic picture book, which you can read, or have read to your child. You no longer need to purchase and download an app. Instead, the Washington County Public Library’s website gives you the book wherever you are for free. TumbleBook is available for use.

• HeritageQuest/Ancestry.com – Coming soon! HeritageQuest is a comprehensive treasury of American genealogical sources, rich in unique primary sources, local and family histories and finding aids. It delivers an essential collection of genealogical and historical sources — with coverage dating back to the 1700s — that can help people find their ancestors and discover a place’s past. HeritageQuest will be available free with an updated Washington County Public Library card.  Ancestry.com (Library Edition) will be available at the Washington County Public Library for genealogical searching.  Check with library staff for a date that these databases will be available.
