It was a soccer match that St. Catharine coach Tim Wolz said we “could have, probably should have, won.” But the Patriots (0-2) fell 3-2 Tuesday to the visiting Marian University Knights.

“We again fell behind early and had opportunities but just couldn’t get the goal to tie the game,” added Wolz.

Twelve minutes into the game the Knights (2-1) scored from close range and five minutes before halftime added a second goal for a 2-0 lead. St. Catharine scored less than a minute later when Sawyer Abshire found the net on an assist from Jeffrey Warren.

The game remained 2-1 until the 69th minute when Marian connected again for a 3-1 advantage.  The Patriots answered with a penalty kick from Ashley Woods with 15 minutes to play but that was the last score of the game as neither team could mount a serious threat in the final minutes.

The Patriots had seven shots on goal, four of them by Woods, while the Knights managed just five shots on frame.

St. Catharine returns to action Sunday at 2 p.m. when they host Lawrence Tech from Southfield, Mich. Lawrence Tech beat Marian University 4-2 in the only game they have played.
