The St. Catharine College Patriots played three basketball games last week against teams with a combined record of 3-16. But while head coach J.T. Burton recognized the talent level his team faced, he also credited his own squad for taking care of business.
“We didn’t look ready to play Friday and it showed with 28 turnovers,” said Burton. “But Saturday we came out focused. We are up 60 points in that game and our guys are still taking charges.”
The two games to which Burton referred were part of the Mid-South Conference Challenge in which all eight conference teams played opponents from outside the conference. The games took place at the Frankfort Convention Center where the Patriots took on Ohio State-Marion on Friday and Ohio State-Mansfield on Saturday.
St. Catharine, now 10-1, manhandled both of the Ohio teams, beating Marion 96-51 and Mansfield 121-40. Against Marion (1-7) Alex Hall had 19 points to lead five players in double figures. Ervin Williams had 18 points and 12 rebounds, Dustin Warren added 12 points, all on three-point goals, and Josh Peery and Terrance Withers had 10 points apiece. Rainer Rickards grabbed 10 rebounds as the Patriots outrebounded the Scarlet Wave 55-28.
