In the first Mid-South Conference action of the season, both the St. Catharine men and women came up short at West Virginia Tech on Saturday afternoon. In a steady downpour, the Patriot women lost 4-2 while the men fell 4-0.

After spotting the Golden Bears a 2-0 lead the Patriot women fought back to make the score 3-2 at halftime. Amy Wurfel scored one goal for the Patriots, while the second came when the ball was deflected off a Tech defender into the goal off a corner kick by Monica Milesky.

Despite several good chances to score in the second half, the Patriots couldn’t find the net as the Golden Bears recorded the only goal of the second period to secure the 4-2 win. The loss dropped St. Catharine’s record to 4-2-1 overall.

In men’s action the Patriots also fell behind 2-0 early and could never recover in absorbing the 4-0 defeat. Trailing 3-0 entering the second half, St. Catharine had many offensive threats but couldn’t convert as the Golden Bears scored the only goal of the second 45 minutes. The loss dropped the Patriots’ record to 4-3.

Both the Patriot men and women will return to conference play at home Tuesday against perennial power University of Rio Grande. The women’s game starts at 1 p.m. followed by the men at 3 p.m.
