Hindered by injuries and illness the St. Catharine College volleyball team fell in three matches last week. The Patriots lost to visiting Indiana University Southeast 3-0 Thursday. On Saturday Mike Doig’s team traveled to Caldwell County High School where they fell in straight sets to Mid Continent University and in four games to Brescia University.

“We have had players out with the flu as well as injuries,” said Doig, whose team fell to 13-30. “We had just eight players healthy Saturday but actually played well, especially against Brescia.”

IUSE topped the Patriots on Thursday by scores of 25-10, 25-16 and 25-23. St. Catharine rallied from a 22-16 deficit in the third game to tie the game but couldn’t maintain the momentum as the visitors scored three of the game’s final four points to win the game and the match.

Mid-Continent improved its record to 4-16 Saturday by beating St. Catharine 25-20, 25-19, 25-15. “We really missed our hitters that were out,” said Doig. The Patriots also were hurt by nine service errors in the match.

In Saturday’s second match Brescia, 3-15, beat the Patriots in four games 25-17, 25-22, 22-25, 25-20.

The Patriots will play their final Mid-South Conference matches of the season Saturday when they travel to Pikeville. The two matches against the Bears have major implications for the conference tournament. If the Patriots can sweep the two matches at Pikeville they will earn a sixth seed in the tournament that starts Nov. 10 in Frankfort. Early in the season Pikeville and St. Catharine split two matches in a tournament played in at Cumberland University.
