Dear Editor,

April is Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Month. The Washington County Homemakers are once again sponsoring the Blue Ribbon Campaign.

Child abuse and neglect has become a major problem nationwide, and especially in the state of Kentucky, which leads the nation in child abuse deaths. In 2009, there were 63,678 children reported as abused, neglected or in need of protective services and 19,419 of these children were confirmed as victims or were found to be in need of protection. This is just in Kentucky. Twenty-three children died as a result of child abuse and neglect during the fiscal year. Every eight minutes a child is reported as abused or neglected in the state of Kentucky. In Washington County there were 32 substantiated cases and 46 children.

Child abuse prevention is the responsibility of each of us. These children are our future. Washington County Judge-Executive John A. Settles signed a proclamation, and the fiscal court agreed that the month of April is Child Abuse Prevention Month in Washington County.

There are many things we can do to help this problem - take an interest in a child – call a child by his/her name – read a child a story – let a child help plan and prepare a meal – plant a flower garden with a child – give a child lots of hugs and kisses. These things may seem like little things to you, but to a child, they are memories for a lifetime. Remember, hands are for helping.

Blue ribbons can be found in town at banks, the courthouse, lawyer’s offices, library, etc. Please pick up one and wear it each day during April to show your support for child abuse prevention.

Thank you,

Pat Sutton,

Blue Ribbon Campaign Chairwoman,
