In the Sept. 22, 2010 opinion page, Alan Corbett announced his support for Jim Crouch in his run for Washington County Sheriff. I have no problem with this; however, I take exception and offense to the continued personal attack, as well a defamation of character, on Sheriff Tommy Bartley. As a former detective/trooper, Mr. Corbett should well know that Sheriff Bartley would have been arrested and his name would have appeared alongside his former deputies in the headlines if he were involved in any way. These are two men that have been charged, but not yet convicted. The federal court will settle this matter. The deputies may have committed a felony trying to make a quick buck, but Tommy Bartley was not charged.
Next, Mr. Corbett states that the people of Washington County have a second chance to make it right. Perhaps a majority of the residents feel they have already made the right choice. Tommy Bartley defeated Mr. Corbett and a third candidate by a large margin. Sheriff Bartley would have still gotten the nomination, even if Mr. Corbett had received the votes that the third candidate received.
Mr. Corbett had some of the wealthiest and most powerful people in Washington County supporting him, and he still was unable to defeat Sheriff Bartley. I think it is time for Mr. Corbett to show some of the integrity that he speaks of and move on.
I have yet to call the Washington County Sheriff’s Office and not receive assistance or reliable advice. Most recently, an individual ran through my fence and fled the scene. When I contacted the sheriff’s office, a deputy came and had the car impounded. After many phone calls and inquires on my behalf, Sheriff Bartley found the individual, and I was compensated for the damage to my property.
One thing that Mr. Corbett and I do agree on is that now is not the time to let political affiliations sway clear thinking. I am a registered Republican that will be casting a vote for Tommy Bartley, a Democrat. I wish Mr. Corbett luck in his future endeavors, since his reputation precedes him.
