“Peace, Fun & Safe Night” will be the theme for this year’s Safe Night Washington County program. This is the 11th year for the Washington County Heartland Youth Coalition to sponsor a night where young people can come to have fun in a safe place with no weapons, no arguments and no drugs and alcohol.
Safe Night Washington County will be held on Saturday, Nov. 14, beginning at 2:30 p.m. at North Washington Elementary School for sixth and seventh graders. The event will run through 9:30 p.m. While there, youth will hear a motivational speaker, attend three workshops and be treated to food, games, door prizes and activities led by teen volunteers. Every youth will receive a Safe Night Washington County t-shirt. Workshop emphasis will be on self esteem/bullying, Internet safety, personal safety, healthy relationships, being fit and alcohol, drug and tobacco prevention.
Applications for Safe Night Washington County were distributed to all sixth and seventh grade students in Washington County last week. Additional forms may be picked up from the Washington County Extension Office and local Family Resource/Youth Service Centers. The cost is $5 for the youth to attend and forms are due to the Washington County Extension Office or to the respective schools by Oct. 27. The first 150 applications submitted will be accepted. Anyone needing additional information should contact the extension office at 336-7741.
Any parent wishing to volunteer to help on November 14th should make the appropriate notation on their youth’s application form. All adult volunteers must have a completed background check.
Transportation will also be provided from Springfield, originating from the Washington County Elementary School and Hilltop Community Center. A parents should mark on the registration form if they would like transportation for their child.
As mentioned earlier, Safe Night is being sponsored by the Washington County Heartland Youth Coalition which assists in the development and implementation of strategies that will decrease the use of alcohol, tobacco, other drugs and violence as well as the incidences of teen sexual involvement among the youth in Washington County. Members of the coalition are from various youth and service organizations in Washington County. The planning committee for Safe Night Washington County is a youth/adult partnership with volunteers representing all areas of the county.
The goals of Safe Night are to:
• Help youth avoid the factors that often lead to acts of violence and alcohol and drug abuse.
• Build safer neighborhoods.
• Encourage communities and individuals to take responsibility for their future.
• Promote community events and activities in safe environments.
• Teach individuals to resolve conflict and mange anger.
• Create local ongoing partnerships for youth and families.
