“Peace, Fun & Safe Night” will be the theme for this year’s Safe Night Washington County program.  This is the 11th year for the Washington County Heartland Youth Coalition to sponsor a night where young people can come to have fun in a safe place with no weapons, no arguments and no drugs and alcohol.

Safe Night Washington County will be held on Saturday, Nov. 14, beginning at 2:30 p.m. at North Washington Elementary School for sixth and seventh graders.  The event will run through 9:30 p.m. While there, youth will hear a motivational speaker, attend three workshops and be treated to food, games, door prizes and activities led by teen volunteers.  Every youth will receive a Safe Night Washington County t-shirt.  Workshop emphasis will be on self esteem/bullying, Internet safety, personal safety, healthy relationships, being fit and alcohol, drug and tobacco prevention.

Additional forms may be picked up from the Washington County Extension Office and local Family Resource/Youth Service Centers.  The cost is $5 for the youth to attend and forms are due to the Washington County Extension Office or to the respective schools by Oct. 27.   The first 150 applications submitted will be accepted.  Anyone needing additional information should contact the extension office at 336-7741.

As mentioned earlier, Safe Night is being sponsored by the Washington County Heartland Youth Coalition which assists in the development and implementation of strategies that will decrease the use of alcohol, tobacco, other drugs and violence as well as the incidences of teen sexual involvement among the youth in Washington County. Members of the coalition are from various youth and service organizations in Washington County.  The planning committee for Safe Night Washington County is a youth/adult partnership with volunteers representing all areas of the county.
