Do your part in making Washington Co. healthier.  A recent report stated that 33 percent of Washington County citizens are obese.  Of this number, 21 percent are children.  Be willing to set a good example for your children and grandchildren.
Weigh Down Washington County 2011 will begin with registration at the Washington County Extension Office, 211 Progress Rd. on Jan. 11 from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m.  The cost of this year’s program will be $10.
The goal of the Weigh Down Washington County program is for participants to lose seven percent of their body weight.  Half of the registration fee pays for the expenses of the program and the remaining $5 will go into a pool that is split by all those who reach the seven-percent goal.  Additional money is added to the “pot” throughout the eight-week weigh-in sessions.  During the weekly weigh-ins, if a person gains weight, he or she must pay $1 to the program.  If you miss a weigh-in and return the following week, he or she must pay a $2 fine.  If you weigh in weekly and lose weight or remain the same you pay nothing.
We are pledging, “No program will be over 20 minutes in length.”  Some of the topics for the weekly sessions will be: “Choose This Not That,” “Medical Advice,” “Active Choices,” “Diabetes Today,” and “How We Lost It.”
The sessions will be held each Tuesday, from Jan. 18 through March 8 at the Washington County Extension Office.  Weekly weigh-ins will be from 5 until 5:15.  The class or activity will be from 5:15 until 5:35.  Anyone failing to weigh before class can weigh after class.
Children are welcome to accompany adults.  Children 18 and under can register each week they attend class to be eligible for the child’s bicycle to be given away March 8.  An adult bicycle will also be given away at the last class.  In addition, a door prize will be given away every week.  To be eligible for the door prize you must be present at the end of class.
During Weigh Down Washington County, members will have the opportunity to exercise by walking in the halls at Washington County High School from 3:30 to 5 p.m. each Monday and Thursday beginning on Jan. 18.  Anyone who does not want to participate in the program but wishes to walk in the hallways during the designated walking times may pay a fee of $5.  This fee will be refunded at the end of the program with the return of a walking sheet.
