The River of Life Church in Springfield is excited about trying to promote the family in the community. Pastor Troy Shelton said this community, as well as churches in it, have people who are struggling in their marriages, and he and his church hope to offer help with the upcoming showing of a new movie called Fireproof.
The film was made by the creators of the movie Facing the Giants, an inspirational movie from the members of Sherwood Baptist Church in Albany, Ga. The film is a project of Stephen and Alex Kendrick, brothers who are also pastors at Sherwood Baptist. It focuses on a firefighter, Capt. Caleb Holt, who lives by the old firefighter’s adage, “Never leave your partner behind.” In the film, Holt follows that motto at work, but in his own marriage, as problems arise, he and his wife face divorce proceedings.
“We really believe right now that a lot of what’s happening in our churches and our community, people are struggling in their marriages, finances, etc.,” Shelton said. “People ask for prayer and counseling, and this movie, too, is a good start. Watching this helps get things back on track, and it may point out things they can change in their own lives and things they can do to make it better.”
The film will be shown at the church on Saturday, Jan. 10 at 7 p.m.
Shelton said following that showing, he will start a six-week sermon series to follow up on the film’s message in helping to strengthen marriages.
“We’re just trying to promote the family and how God can make an impact if he’s the center of the marriage. But with him not being the center, it’s really tough,” Shelton said. “Marriage was his idea, and we believe in letting God control that. We want to make sure the family stays the way God intended it, and that’s what this whole movie is about, and that’s what we’re trying to communicate.”
Fireproof will show Jan. 10 at 7 p.m., and doors open at 6:30 p.m. Shelton’s sermons series begins Sunday, Jan. 11 and continues through Feb. 15 with services starting at 10 a.m. each Sunday.
