After a holiday layoff spanning two weeks, the St. Catharine College basketball teams return to action Tuesday. Lena Bramblett’s women will visit Ohio Dominican University in Columbus, while J.T. Burton’s men will be at home against nationally ranked Southern Polytechnic State from Marietta, Ga.

The Patriot women will take a 6-9 record into the season’s second half. In their last outing (Dec. 20) they snapped a four- game losing streak with a 61-59 win at Transylvania University. That was the second game for both Reena Haliburton and Sa’de Mullins, who became eligible after the first semester. In the victory over Transy, Haliburton had nine points while Mullins had four points and seven rebounds.

“They will make a big difference for us in the second half,” said Bramblett. “We also hope to add Brandy Middleton this semester. We recruited her out of high school (Louisville Moore), but she went to the military and was just discharged.”

As a point guard, Middleton could help fill the void left when senior Iona Caulder went out late last semester with an ankle injury. Bramblett said she hopes to get Caulder back some time in January.

The St. Catharine men will return to the hardwood with a formidable opponent visiting Lourdes Hall on Tuesday. Southern Poly currently holds a 9-2 record and is ranked 11th in the most recent NAIA poll.

The Patriots should be at full strength for the second half of the schedule as Terrance Withers is expected back to practice Thursday after sitting out three games with a fractured fibula.

“We will need everyone because the conference will be as tough as ever,” said Burton.

Both SCC teams will begin Mid-South Conference play Jan. 14 at WV Tech.
