Offense came at a premium, as the St. Catharine Lady Patriots (11-20, 7-15 MSC) fell to the University of the Cumberlands in a crucial conference series.

After splitting the earlier season meeting between the two Patriot squads, the Purple Pats were looking for an improved result when they traveled to the Cumberlands for an important conference matchup.

In game one, errors would tell the tale of the tape, as Krystal Cammuse (Frankfort) hurled seven quality innings but fell victim to two untimely errors by her defense that allowed two unearned runs to cross the plate.

However, Shelbi Thornhill (Harrodsburg) would rise to the occasion, driving in Taylor Steff (Louisville) in the top of the fifth to cut the lead to two.

Unfortunately for SCC, it would be too little too late, as they were unable to muster any offense for the remainder of the game to eventually fall 4-1.

In game two, the Patriots’ offense found some life, plating three runs on seven hits after managing just one run on the same amount of hits in game one.

SCC opened the game with a run in the top of the first inning when Thornhill drilled a double to bring home Tiffany Wickline (Georgetown) for the first run of the game.

On the mound Wickline would blank the Cumberlands for the first four innings, fanning six hitters but would fall victim to defensive errors in the bottom of the fifth to allow three runs to cross the plate.

Trailing 3-1 the Patriots would climb right back into the game, scoring two runs off the bats of

Thornhill and Jesse Crouch (Lawrenceburg) to tie the game and force extras.

However, despite the stellar 2-4 day with two runs batted in and a run from Thornhill, SCC would fall by a score of 4-3 in the extra frame.

The Patriots will return to Salt River Electric Field when they host Mid-South Conference rival Shawnee State University at 3 p.m. on Friday and the University of Rio Grande at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
