The St. Catharine College Patriots traveled to Circleville, Ohio, last weekend and got in a whole lot of volleyball in the Ohio Christian University Invitational Tournament. The results, for the most part, were favorable as the Patriots won five of six games to improve to 10-16 for the season.
“I thought we played to our potential,” said SCC Athletics Director Mike Doig. “We played with a lot of energy and excitement. It was a fun brand of volleyball to watch.”
The Patriots started action Friday in the seven-team tournament by winning three matches. They began with a 3-0 victory over Central Bible College of Missouri and followed that with another 3-0 win against the host Ohio Christian team. In a thrilling five-game match, St. Catharine topped Rochester College (Michigan), winning the decisive final game, 16-14.
After the day of pool play on Friday, the Patriots went into the single elimination tournament Saturday morning when they topped Ohio Christian again, 3-0. Then they ran into Rochester again, but this time they fell in three games to the eventual champion. The Patriots were forced to play without starting setter Taylor Malott, who suffered an ankle injury on Friday.
“Taylor has been the setter all year, but our girls responded and competed very well,” added Doig.
They competed well enough to win the third place game with a 3-0 victory over Great Lakes Christian College. Mandy Gray, a sophomore defensive specialist from Princeton, Kentucky, and Lauren Bowling, a freshman hitter from Florence, were named to the all-tournament team.
