Special to the Sun
Head volleyball coach Juanita Mangan does not teach science at St. Catharine College. But she did conduct an experiment Saturday morning with the student/athletes on her team. And even though the experiment did not net a win in either match played that day, Mangan was pleased with what the future could hold.
“We moved quite a few players around to different positions Saturday, Mangan said following losses to Asbury and St. Louis College of Pharmacy in a doubleheader played at Asbury. “It really stemmed from some players being frustrated with hitting so we moved some to defense and shifted our middle hitter to outside.”
The Patriots dropped the first match to Asbury, 11-4, by scores of 25-6, 25-10, 25-17. They were much more competitive in the second match against St. Louis College of Pharmacy, 3-4, losing 25-22, 25-23, 25-19.
“It is going to take a while for the players to make the adjustments to the new positions but I saw some good things out of it. “Shay (Mangan) had a lot of digs at the libero position and Sam Gehler was more aggressive moving from middle hitter to outside hitter.”
St. Catharine, 1-19, will be back on the court tonight at home in a Mid-South Conference match against Lindsey Wilson College. The varsity match will begin at 8 p.m.
