The St. Catharine College women’s soccer team eclipsed their 2008 victory total last week with two wins. The Patriots improved to 6-3-1 for the season by beating visiting Rio Grande on Tuesday and winning at Berea on Thursday.
Paul Patton’s team topped Rio Grande 2-0 in a Mid-South match which was the first conference victory ever for St. Catharine as they play the second year in the MSC. Played in a heavy downpour, the Patriots went up 1-0 in the first half on a goal by Krista Russell off an assist from Natalie Hurst. Russell then had the assist on a second half goal by Nicolette Catlett. Goalkeeper Lee Ann Walker earned her fourth shutout of the year.
At Berea the Patriots scored three times in the first half en route to a 4-0 win. Russell had three goals and Monica Milesky netted one in the victory. Milesky also had one assist as did Amy Wurfel, Cheyenne Hess and Natalie Hurst.
Patton’s men didn’t fare as well last week as they dropped their only contest, a 6-0 decision Tuesday to visiting Rio Grande, the NAIA national runner-up last season and the eighth ranked team this year.
The Patriots battled through the soggy conditions and trailed just 1-0 at halftime, that goal coming when a ball skidded off a St. Catharine defender into the net. The visitors added five more goals in the second half as the Patriots’ record dropped to 6-4 for the season.
Both the St. Catharine teams are back in action Thursday with a conference game at home against Georgetown. The women play at 2 p.m. followed by the men at 4 p.m. On Friday the men are again at home where they will play Crown College at 4 p.m.
