Over the past three days, the St. Catharine College wrestling coaching staff, head coach Spencer Adams, assistant coach Gary Canter and graduate assistant Brandon Sellers, attended the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Conference in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

The coaching staff took the trip to in order to enhance their coaching skills by working with coaches from across the United States.

This NWCA conference hosts about 300 college coaches across the nation from NCAA Division I, II and III, along with teams from the NJCAA, NAIA and the NCWA.

Present among these coaches and clinicians were Zeke Jones (former Team USA National/Olympic freestyle wrestling coach), Sammie Henson (world champion for Team USA), Kyle Dake (four-time NCAA champion and member of Team USA), Bob Bowlsby (commissioner of the Big 12 Conference) and Mike Moyer (president of the National Wrestling Coaches Association).

Some of the sessions attended by the SCC wrestling coaching staff included: improving graduation and retention rates, communicating wrestling’s importance to school administrations and community members, sustaining a college wrestling program in the first three years, creative strategies to build interest in the program, hiring and managing assistant coaches, the power of branding in building relationships and energy in a program, sports nutrition and weight management, developing a championship level culture, strategies for developing more confident, consistent and coachable athletes, among others.

“What a phenomenal conference!” Adams said. “I think it was a great way to learn the ins and outs of a successful collegiate program and how to go about achieving success on every level.

This conference was exactly what we as a coaching staff needed as we prepare for the arrival of our student-athletes on campus and for our inaugural year as a program.”
