Springfield goes Hollywood: Take 3!

It’s hard to imagine that anyone could call it common, but it seems these days, getting attention from a movie company or some other group that can bring publicity to our little town of Springfield is, well, kind of common.

In the four years I’ve lived here, we now have our third brush with stardom. First, it was the 2007 shot at hosting the world premier of “The Simpsons Movie.” We didn’t win the grand prize, but we were recognized around the globe, and had voters casting their ballots for us to be the true home of the animated television series.

In 2008, we were busy to make Horton hear us in Springfield as the Dr. Suess classis, “Horton Hears a Who” movie crew visited our town. Again, we didn’t win the prize of being named as “Who-Ville,” and win a chance to host a VIP screening of the movie before its release. Again, we didn’t win, but the community members had a great time, and we received attention that cannot be purchased as the world looked on.

Now, we have another chance to be seen, and it appears we have already won this contest.

Producers for a new television commercial for a cell phone provider have been visiting communities across Kentucky, and wouldn’t you know it, they chose Springfield to be the site for filming a new TV commercial. The filming company, Two Popes, operated by brothers Greg and Jerry Pope, say they chose Springfield because of the hospitable reception they have received here, as well as the clean-cut, well-kept appearance of the community.

Two Popes has produced many commercials you may have seen, as well as some you have to see if you have not. NASCAR fans may recall some of the commercials Kentucky native and NASCAR driver Michael Waltrip has appeared in for NAPA Auto Parts. Those commercials were created by Two Popes, and they can be seen on the company’s Web site, www.twopopes.com on the Internet.

If you haven’t seen it, you should also visit the site and check out a very funny clip Two Popes created as an ad for the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers football team. It’s very funny, and any fan of sports, or TV shows about wild animals for that matter, will especially enjoy it.

Two Popes has also done ads for Toyota, as well as Cobra Golf and other popular products. Now, they will be doing some work in Springfield, Ky., and they want to use you as part of the cast.

On Friday, Oct. 9, the group will be here to film a TV commercial for Bluegrass Cellular, a regional cell phone provider.

If you want to take part in the process, you need to show up in downtown Springfield on Friday around 8 a.m. Filming will run until about 3 p.m.

For a town the size of Springfield, having the chance to earn all of this free publicity for our community is an amazing opportunity. Let’s all embrace it, and show up in downtown Springfield to make this another successful promotion for our town!
