Officially it is listed as an exhibition game on the St. Catharine schedule. But the outcome of Saturday’s game at Tusculum College (Tennessee) was huge for J.T. Burton’s team. As the Patriots prepare for the beginning of the Mid-South Conference schedule this week (see related story), they received a real boost with a 76-49 win over the Pioneers who are a NCAA Division II team.
“We really played well,” said Burton following the victory. “We went on a big run in the first half and everything kept clicking.”
The run was a 20-4 rally that took the Patriots to a 31-14 lead over the Pioneers who fell to 2-5 with the loss. Following the big first half run, Tusculum never got the margin under 15 points the remainder of the game.
Brandon Johnson had 19 points to lead four Patriots in double figures. Ervin Williams scored 16 points on 7-9 from the field and also had a team high seven rebounds. Terrance Withers had 11 points and also had five of the 15 steals the Patriots had. Marquis Lee also had 11 points.
The Patriots next take on Georgetown College Thursday night with an 8 p.m. tipoff on the SCC campus in Lourdes Hall.
The homestand continues with a 4 p.m. game against Shawnee State Saturday. Life University visits St. Catharine Monday, Dec. 6 at 7 p.m. before the Patriots hit the road to take on Morehead State and former SCC coach Donnie Tyndall at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
