When the 2009 Springfield-Washington County Chamber of Commerce Banquet tips off on Jan. 29, a very special keynote speaker will be the center of attention.

Mitch Barnhart, director of athletics at the University of Kentucky, has been secured as the speaker for this year’s event. Dawn Pettus, executive director of the chamber, said Barnhart has confirmed that he will speak at the annual event.

Ralph Blandford, president of the chamber, said Barnhart will be an excellent draw to the chamber banquet.

“We’re looking forward to seeing what Mr. Barnhart has to say regarding the Kentucky basketball and football programs,” Blandford said. “He is a very difficult man to get, and so we feel very honored that he can take time out of his schedule to join us.”

The banquet will again feature the annual presentation of awards to the citizen of the year, as well as the lifetime achievement and youth leadership awards. The Sidewalk of Fame award will also be presented to someone who has made a significant contribution to the success of the local festival.

In addition, chamber board members who are completing their terms will be honored, and incoming board members will be recognized at the banquet.

The banquet is set for Thursday, Jan. 29 at Mordecai’s. Tickets for the event are $25 each, and can be purchased at the chamber office in the Opera House. A social time will begin at 6 p.m., followed by the banquet at 6:30 p.m. For more information, call (859) 336-3810, ext. 1.
