Thomas Pettus scored the only run Washington County’s 12-year-old team would need in the first inning Monday, but in the fifth he knocked in two insurance runs that led to a 3-0 shutout of Russell County in the District 5 Tournament opener.
Washington County got great mound work out of Wade Moore. Moore relinquished three hits and walked a like number. He also struck out 10. Adam Smith came on in relief over the last inning and two-thirds.
Smith had one hit, as did Jordan Bottoms and Luke Mattingly. It was Moore’s fielder’s choice that scored Pettus in the first.
Washington County plays South Hardin at 8 p.m. Thursday as pool play continues.
