In the Monday night game, the WC Commanders (1-4, 0-2) grabbed their first win of the season against the 2-2 Berea Pirates.

Before the 74-70 victory, WC had been outscored on the season by 166 points.

Last Saturday night, the Commanders fell by a score of 76-39 to the Bardstown Tigers (4-0, 1-0)

Last season, the Tigers went undefeated in regular-season district play but fell in the 19 district finals to the Bethlehem Eagles.

Bardstown more than doubled WC’s points in last season’s two season matchups.

Thomas Nelson

The Thomas Nelson Generals improved to 2-0 in 19 district play (3-1 overall) after a 77-47 beatown of the WC last Friday night.

However, the first quarter was  almost even for the Commanders, as the Generals were unable to shake them after one period, going into the second quarter with a 13-9 deficit.

But Thomas Nelson slowly began to pull away from there, building up a 17-point, 37-20 lead by halftime, highlighted by a steal-and-score conversion from junior guard Cameron Morgeson with zeroes left on the clock.

WCHS consistently trailed by approximately 20 points throughout the second half, but an 11-0 run by the Generals in the closing minutes sealed the deal for Thomas Nelson.

Leading the way for the Commanders was senior Thomas Pettus, who chipped in 18 points in his first game back at his natural two-guard position, followed by senior Morgan Churchill’s seven.

By the end of the game, WC allowed Thomas Nelson four double-digit scorers, led by Morgeson’s 19.

WC’s next game is a road game this Friday night against the Bethlehem Eagles.
