Game highlights: The boys’ basketball team was in Adair County on Thursday to tip off the First and Farmers National/Lindsey Wilson Classic against the host Indians, and an early deficit proved too much for the Commanders to surmount.

Adair County (5-3) jumped out to a 17-7 lead after the first quarter thanks to a balanced attack, with six different Indians scoring in the opening frame.

Turnovers were a problem early for WC, being called for a pair of five-second closely guarded violations and struggling with Adair County’s pressure at times.

The Commanders had a tough time early in the second quarter as well, as Adair County steals led to a pair of easy layups on their way to a 27-10 advantage.

WC appeared to be slipping out of the game, but senior Alex Marshall scored 11 of Washington County’s next 14 points and junior Morgan Churchill added a layup to cut the Indians’ to 11 at 37-26 with under a minute to play in the half.

Adair County, however, had an answer when sophomore Zack Hutchison pulled up for, and hit, an NBA-range three-pointer as time expired to put WC in a 14-point halftime hole.

The Indians essentially put the game away with a big run in the third quarter, outscoring WC 31-10 to take a commanding 71-36 lead into the final period, where they coasted to victory.

Washington County was led in scoring by Marshall’s 22 to go with 12 rebounds. Churchill added eight, followed by sophomore Zac Graves’ seven.
The loss dropped WC to 2-6 on the year and ball control will certainly be an issue addressed by WC going forward, as they committed 19 turnovers while recording just one assist.

The Commanders continued the classic on Friday and Saturday after press time.

They’ll be back on the court on Thursday at the National Guard Holiday Classic in LaRue County at 8 p.m. against Carroll County.
