WC softball begins 2009 season at Taylor County

Despite some big hits, the WC Commanderettes softball team dropped their season opener 9-7 to Taylor County Monday.

The Commanderettes got off to an early 2-0 start in the first inning as they held the Lady Cardinals hitless through the first two innings. Taylor County tied it up in the third and took a 4-2 lead in the fourth.

WC got a run back in the fifth as Pooh Railey tripled and was knocked in by an Olivia Thompson single. The Lady Cards exploded for four runs in the bottom of the frame to take an 8-3 lead.

The Commanderettes rallied for two runs in the top of the sixth as Kelly Hill tripled to earn two RBI. Taylor County added run in the bottom of the inning to make it 9-7 TC.

Natalie Maupin tripled in the top of the seventh, but the Commanderettes were not able to plate any runs as they fell to Taylor County 9-7.

Thompson and Hill each had three RBI for the Commanderettes as Maupin, Thompson and Pooh Railey each had three hits in the loss.

The Commanderettes play their first home game Wednesday as they host Mercer County at 5:30 p.m. at the softball field at Idle Hour Park.
