Weigh Down winners announced

“Weigh Down Washington County 2010” began on Jan. 5 and had its last regular meeting on March 2.  Once again, this winter was a challenge with a lot of cold, snowy weather, especially on meeting days.  Many members missed class due to bad roads and miserable weather conditions.  Missing class is not good when you are at home hungry and can’t get away from tempting food.

Congratulations to the winners of “Weigh Down Washington County” in meeting their goal of losing 7 percent of their body weight.  The 10 winners are: Stacy Bartley, Jacque Cundiff, Diane McDaniel, Norma Jean Yankey, Barbara Best, Glenn Best, Terry Gabhart, Linda Scott, Gail Mastin and Penny Warner.  These 10 people lost a total of 155 pounds.

We are not revealing the total pounds lost by the entire group because that is still a work in progress.  This was an outstanding group for several reasons.  We had more people staying for meetings than any previous group.  These participants requested a once monthly meeting with a weigh in and program to keep them accountable for their weight loss.

Thanks to the interest of this class, we will meet the first Tuesday of every month at 5 p.m. at the extension office.  There will be no additional charge for the program for this year’s Weigh Down members.  We will have a weigh-in and a 20-minute program.  If you have kept your last weight or lost additional weight, you will get a reward.  This reward will be different most months.  Any person not in the 2010 class may join the group for $5.

This year we encouraged members to bring children to the program to begin learning about good nutrition.  They did not join “Weigh Down” or get weighed.   Each child entered their name in a drawing for a bicycle.  Our grand prize bicycle winner was Jessica Settles.  We appreciate the children attending the classes.

AARP Safe Driving Class Coming Soon

AARP will conduct a Safe Driver Safety Program on May 8 beginning at 10 a.m. at the extension office.  The class will end at 3:30 P.M. but a lunch break will be taken.  The cost of the class is $12 for AARP members and $14 for non-members.  Remember that if you are over 55 years of age you will get a discount on your auto insurance that will be in effect for several years.  To learn the amount of discount and the duration of the discount you should contact your insurance company.  If you are interested, please come to the extension office at 211 Progress Avenue and register.
