We are close to the point where some livestock producers would normally start to apply nitrogen to tall fescue pastures to boost production levels and stockpile for fall and winter grazing. There were few opportunities for this practice the last two years due to the dry weather, but 2009 has good potential due to the favorable soil moisture conditions. Since there are many factors that will impact the profitability of this practice, the question at hand is: Under what set of conditions will applying nitrogen to pastures pay this year?
