Washington County 4-H was well represented this year at the State 4-H Communications Day event held on July 14 on the University of Kentucky campus in Lexington. This year, four Washington County 4-H members qualified to advance to the state level of the speech competition. All four first won their age divisions on the school, county and then district levels to earn the opportunity to compete at state.   

The members of the Washington County 4-H Young Riders competed at the State 4-H Horse Show, July 2 and July 3 at the Kentucky State Fairgrounds in Louisville. All five members won numerous top ten awards in the walking/racking division of the show. Results from the state show are included this week.

Hungry children, empty pantries and daunting statistics have been the main theme of the previous articles concerning the food insecurity problem in Washington County.

In the midst of a drought and the hottest summer since 1936, water is the limiting factor to a good garden this year. I can’t tell you how many landscape plants I have looked at that just needs a good soaking.
