  • Phil Simms to visit


    Plans have been made and commitments have been set for former NFL quarterback Phil Simms to return to his early childhood home of Springfield.

    “Phil Simms is coming to town,” Ralph Blandford, who contacted Simms, said. “We don’t have a particular date set, but it will be after April.”
    Blandford said Simms, who is an NFL television analyst, had to get through the season before making a trip home.

  • Photo of Moran discussed on TV


    J.S. Moran, who served as editor at The Springfield Sun, was mentioned during Great Day Live, a morning talk show on WHAS 11 in Louisville.

    The show featured Louisville Courier-Journal photographer Bill Luster, who was retiring that day (Friday) after 42 years.
    Luster discussed some of his favorite pictures with hosts Terry Meiners and Rachel Platt.
    An image of J.S. Moran was among those discussed.

  • Community Action needs funds to help keep senior center meals program


    Georgia Briney, director of the congregate meals program at Central Kentucky Community Action made a request for funds at a regular scheduled fiscal court meeting on Monday.

    The request was made to help cover the costs of meals at the Springfield Senior Citizens Center.
    Briney said the program took a loss during the last fiscal year and is headed toward a bigger loss this year.
    “This past fiscal year, this program lost $60,802,” she said. “This fiscal year we’re projected to lose over $100,000.”

  • BBQ events could expand


    The Jim Beam BBQ Classic held at Springfield’s Harvest Festival could expand in a big way soon.
    The event, according to coordinator Ralph Blandford, has been a huge success so far.

    “According to (people at Jim Beam), they’ve gotten great exposure, and they’re very satisfied with what we’ve done,” he said.

  • Democrats, Comer win the county


    The majority of city and county voters picked the winners in the state election last Tuesday.
    Nearly 2,900 of the 8,190 registered voters in the county showed up to cast their ballot, a 35 percent turnout.

    County Clerk Glen Black said the turnout was nice, but it could always be higher.

  • Keeping time downtown


    What was once thought to be a gift to the city, is now officially a gift to the city.

    The clock downtown now belongs to the city of Springfield, whereas it previously belonged to the Rotary Club.
    “Some of the Rotarians thought that they had already given it to the city, but we read minutes from three or four years to assure that nothing was ever officially accepted through the city council,” Laurie Smith, city administrator, said.

  • Riney’s dairy facility unveiled to the public


    One man’s dairy barn is another man’s legacy.
    During the grand opening of his new dairy facility, Billy Riney, Jr. couldn’t find the right words. He had spoken once, got choked up, and passed off the microphone.

    After a few others spoke at the unveiling of his massive, technologically-advanced dairy barn, Riney wanted to say a few more words.

  • Open for business in Willisburg


    Willisburg residents can now lay claim to convenience when it comes to some of their shopping needs.

    The new Dollar General held the official grand opening on Saturday, much to the delight of nearby residents.
    According to Willisburg mayor Pat Kirsch, shoppers lined up before 7 a.m. on Saturday to get in at 8 a.m.
    People came from as far as Mackville and Harrodsburg to check out the new place.
    The store, which Kirsch estimates has created as many as 10 jobs, was in early planning stages in January of this year.

  • Nationwide test for emergency alarm system today

    According to a press release from Kentucky Emergency Management (KYEM), the agency will join multiple federal agencies today to conduct the first nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System(EAS). The test will begin at 2 p.m. EST and will interrupt
    television and radio broadcasts for approximately 30 seconds while
    broadcasting a test message.

    The EAS is a broadcast alert and warning system that can be activated by the

  • St. Catharine College to break ground on new Hundley Library


    After years in the planning stage and much anticipation, St. Catharine College will break ground on the new Emily W. Hundley Library and Center for Graduate Studies at 5 p.m. on Nov. 14.

    The public is invited and encouraged to attend. In addition to the new library and graduate school, the $8 million facility will also house classrooms, conference rooms, study areas and a café. St. Catharine College President, William D. Huston, said the new building will be the crown jewel of the campus and the center of student life at SCC.
