  • County to receive $826,000 for rural roads from state

    Two roads in Washington County were singled out for resurfacing during Friday’s regular scheduled fiscal court meeting.
    Patty Dunaway, a representative with the Kentucky Rural Secondary Roads program, spoke to the court about the 2011-12 rural secondary road program recommendations for road work in Washington County.

  • County discusses new sick day policy

    A new policy on county employees donating sick days to each other could be in the works for Washington County.
    Washington County Judge-Executive John Settles brought before the court a request to consider what he called an emergency situation on Friday during a regularly scheduled meeting.
    “We have a situation that has arisen, and to be quite honest, the employee has not asked for this,” Settles said. “Some of the other employees have inquired about contributing some of their excess sick days to this employee.”

  • Fire department still may quit

    Just when the fire appeared to have died down, the flames could now be fanned again.
    The Washington County Fire Protection Association is again looking at a deadline to stop service to Washington Countians, despite the Washington County Fiscal Court meeting the fire protection group’s request to formally give it support.

  • The eagle has landed

     

    This Bald Eagle was seen in Washington County recently by a local citizen who reported it to The Springfield Sun. The location of the bird is not being released for its protection. According to Kate Hayden, an avian biologist with the Kentucky Department of Fish & Wildlife, there are only 84 pairs of nesting eagles in Kentucky.

  • Spring View women's center offers services to expectant, new mothers

    Some changes have occurred at the Spring View Hospital Women’s Center recently.
    Among those changes is a new service and a new suite.
    Of the brick and mortar variety, a new LDRP suite has been added. LDRP means that a woman giving birth is able to go through labor, delivery, recovery and postpartum care all in the same room.

  • Gibson is new administrator at Springfield Nursing and Rehab Center

     

    The Springfield Nursing and Rehabilitation Center has a new administrator.
    Debbie Gibson, a native of Willard, Ohio, has been on the job for the past week, and she said things are going well as she settles into her new position.
    Gibson and her husband moved to the area in 2005. They live just across the county line in Boyle County, and they moved here for her husband’s work with Toyotomi.

  • Seven indicted by grand jury

    A Washington County grand jury has returned indictments against seven individuals.
    • Howard James Craddock Jr., 50, and Lori Lee Baker, 73, both of Harrodsburg Road in Mackville, were indicted on six counts each in relation to a meth lab found at that address on Feb. 6.

  • Sansbury Care Center now offering rehab services

     

    The staff at the Sansbury Care Center has been looking after the needs of its residents for years. Now, the center is offering services that extend beyond its own walls, and into Washington and surrounding counties.
    Laura Livers, occupational therapist and director of Sansbury Care Center Outpatient Rehab, said the facility received its license in August to provide outpatient services. Previously, the rehab center could only work with those within Sansbury.

  • Amish family making maple syrup in Willisburg

     

    Growing up, Reuben Miller watched his grandfather make maple syrup, and he knew it was something he wanted to do some day.
    Miller and his family are members of the amish community, and they moved to Willisburg in 2010 from Zanesville, Ohio. The family farms the land around its home in northern Washington County, and Reuben builds portable storage buildings that he sells. But this year, with the weather just right, he decided to take on a project he had wanted to do since he was a young boy — making homemade maple syrup.
