  • Local student takes steps to become a leader

     

    While most kids are playing Follow the Leader, St. Dominic eighth-grader Molly Simms is taking steps toward becoming a leader. She is taking part in Presentation Academy's 16th annual Eighth Grade Leadership Forum in Louisville. The program, which is for eighth-grade girls in Catholic schools, consists of three sessions held during the school year. The first was on Oct. 5, and Simms just returned from the second session held Nov. 11. The final session will take place on Feb. 16, 2011.

  • Johnson jumps for joy on 60th birthday

     

    When most people turn 60 years old, they celebrate with the traditional birthday cake, presents and party favors. But for Judy Johnson, she didn't want another boring birthday – she decided to try something different by skydiving from 10,000 feet.

    Johnson lives near Arnold's Airport in Washington County, and she watches local skydivers from her house. After seeing how graceful they looked in the air, the seed was planted for her to give it a try.

  • Improvements under way at city park

     

    Springfield Public Works Supervisor Glenn Mattingly told the city council Tuesday that workers have been taking advantage of the nice weather to commence improvements at Idle Hour Park. On the ground, work is being done to expand and remodel the concession stand, while in the air, the lights on the two upper fields are being completely rewired and bulbs are being replaced. The city hopes the improvements will provide a better atmosphere for everyone who uses the facilities.

  • Message of Columbine victim presented tonight at 6:30 p.m. at WCHS

     

    Rachel Joy Scott’s name might not be one you recognize when you hear it, but her story is one you will never forget.
    Rachel, a student at Columbine High School in Colorado, was the first person killed in the tragic Colorado school shooting on April 20, 1999. The students that took her life, as well as their own lives and the lives of 11 other students and one teacher, reportedly did so as a result of bullying.

    For 91 years the United States has honored Americans who serve or have served in our country’s military by proclaiming the eleventh day of the eleventh month as Veterans Day. Washington County High School hosted one such celebration on Thursday, inviting all who have served to take part in the salute, and to remember those who served, but are no longer with us.

  • Local kids catch a wave at B.L.A.S.T.

     

    Surf's up, Washington County! The Washington County Heartland Youth Coalition sponsored “Beach B.L.A.S.T.” for fourth and fifth graders in the county on Saturday at St. Dominic School. The event is designed to provide a fun, safe environment for kids while also educating them on important social and life issues.

  • City buys five new police cruisers

    The Springfield Police Department’s officers are about to be riding in style after the purchase of five new 2010 Dodge Chargers. The action was approved by the Springfield City Council at its Oct. 12 meeting. Springfield Police Chief Fred Armstrong told the council the new vehicles are needed because the cost of repairs to the current fleet keeps mounting.
