  • Clements found not guilty in social host ordinance case

    What began as a party for 10 or 12 friends quickly grew to more as uninvited guests showed up on Pat Clements’ property on June 6, 2008.

    That’s what witnesses for the defense told jurors in Washington County District Court last Tuesday, and that’s what the members believed, as the six-person jury returned a not guilty verdict 10 minutes after leaving the courtroom to deliberate the case.

  • Christmas comes to Springfield Dec. 5-7

    Christmas will be coming to Springfield a few weeks early as the city, along with neighboring Lebanon, hosts the Heart of Kentucky Holiday Festival Dec. 5-7.

    This is the fourth year for the event, which will feature a weekend full of activities for young and old.

  • Local youths go scouting for food

    A group of Cub Scouts from Mackville and Willisburg were out and about Saturday as part of the annual Scouting for Food event.

    Cynthia Porter, cub master of Pack 458, gathered her young scouts and their parents Saturday morning to collect food for the needy in Washington County. Formed just three years ago, Pack 458 has grown from six members to 25, according to Porter. She said the event has been a success, and continues to grow each year.

Following a farming accident on June 18, the Washington County teen has been on a long road to recovery. The prayers from friends, family, and even strangers have no doubt played a huge part in his recovery.

  • Springfield Presbyterian celebrates history with 220th anniversary

    Springfield Presbyterian Church celebrated its 220th anniversary on Nov. 16. The church is one of the oldest churches in the area, being founded in 1788 by a colony of Scotch-Irish pioneers who also played a role in the founding of Washington County.

    The roots of the church date back to the missionary work of Rev. Terah Templin, who came to Kentucky before 1781 and acquired 600 acres of land about five miles north of Springfield. He is believed to have given the first sermon ever delivered in Kentucky.

  • Clements found not guilty

    Local businessman and school board member Pat Clements was found not guilty of violating Washington County's social host ordinance, which prohibits adults from hosting parties or providing alcohol to minors.

    It took a Washington County jury about 10 minutes to return with a verdict of not guilty and clear Clements in the case charging him with providing alcohol to minors at a party that took place on June 6 of this year.

    The verdict was returned at approximately 4:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon. See a complete story in next week's Springfield Sun.

  • Bank robbery suspect arrested

    After receiving word that a man wanted in connection with the Nov. 7 robbery of Springfield State Bank was in their city, Louisville Metro Police took the suspect into custody on Tuesday, Nov. 11.

  • Springfield 911 dispatch center voted smoke free by city council

    You can smoke ‘em if you’ve got ‘em at the Springfield Police Department, but you’ll have to take ‘em outside.

    At a meeting held on Nov. 10, the Springfield City Council approved a motion to make the Springfield Police Department a smoke-free building.

    Previously, employees who smoked were allowed to use a small kitchen as a smoking area. Now, no one is permitted to light up inside.

  • SCC Circle of Friends eclipses $200,000

    Even in these uncertain economic times there is one thing that remains a certainty. That is the annual support of the Washington County community for St. Catharine College. Such support was evident again Thursday night at the Washington County Circle of Friends dinner that generated $201,693 for the local school.

    “I am continually amazed by the generosity of the people in Washington County,” said Jenna Copple, Vice-President for Advancement. “Even in this tough economy they stepped up again to support these students and the college.”
