  • Special election set to replace Kelly

    A special election has been set for voters in the 14th State Senate district to replace Dan Kelly, who was named to a judgeship in the 11th Judicial Circuit Monday by Gov. Steve Beshear.

    The special election will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2009 for the district that encompasses Marion, Mercer, Nelson, Taylor, Washington counties.

  • Local road designated as Lincoln Heritage Scenic Highway

    Chances are pretty good that for almost two weeks, local residents have been traveling along the National Scenic Byway and not even known about it. That's because as of Oct. 16, US-150 through Washington County has been officially designated as part of the Lincoln Heritage Scenic Highway, which is also now a part of the National Scenic Byway.

  • Kelly sworn in as circuit judge

    For the past 19 years, Dan Kelly, R-Springfield, has served Kentucky as a state senator, so it only stands to reason that he would be addressed by that title. Not so.

    “You can’t call me that anymore,” Kelly joked when addressed as ‘Sen. Kelly’ in a Monday interview.

    Following the news of his appointment to a vacant judgeship in the 11th Judicial Circuit, Kelly said he is pleased to have received the honor from Gov. Steve Beshear.

  • County looks to repair damaged ambulance

    What do you get when you cross a county ambulance with a cow? How about damage that will cost about $4,000 in parts and $1,000 in labor? Washington County EMS truck number 5 struck a cow in the road early last week while making a run. In an effort to get the vehicle back in service, EMS director Mark Hale asked the Washington County Fiscal Court if there was a way to take parts from a surplus ambulance and repair the damaged truck.

  • After 72 years, Carey still carrying on in the funeral business

    The following is the first in a four-part series about local citizens who have extensive service time in their chosen profession or community service organization.

    It’s one thing to say that you have a lifetime of experience, but in the case of Rudolph Carey, it’s literally the truth. In his 94 years, Carey has worked 72 of those at the funeral home in Springfield which bears his name, Carey and Son. While most people his age are happy to enjoy retirement and taking it easy, Rudolph gets up every morning and is ready to go to work.

  • Lincoln Heritage Highway celebration set for Friday morning

    A series of press conferences and community observances is planned Friday, October 23 to celebrate recent designation of the Lincoln Heritage Highway from Hodgenville through Danville as a National Scenic Byway.  The Lincoln Heritage Highway is a 71-mile stretch of US 31E and US 150 that also passes through New Haven , Bardstown, Springfield and Perryville.

  • Governor appoints Dan Kelly to 11th Circuit Judgeship

    Gov. Steve Beshear announced today the appointment of State Senator Dan Kelly as a judge in the 11th Judicial Circuit.  Sen. Kelly was among three names submitted to Gov. Beshear by the seven-member nominating commission. 

    “Sen. Kelly has the appropriate temperament and experience for this position,” said Gov. Beshear.  “I feel confident he will provide fair, honest and judicious service to the people of the 11th Judicial Circuit.”

    Kelly will be officially sworn in at the Washington County Judicial Center today at 5 p.m.

  • City avoids playing the Grinch with Christmas party

    As the Christmas holiday season nears, the last thing the Springfield City Council wants to do is play the role of the Grinch, or even Ebenezer Scrooge. But with a tight city budget, the town is having to face some tough decisions concerning expenses, especially what needs to be cut and what will not be cut. At its meeting last Tuesday, the council voted 5-1 to continue the annual Christmas dinner for city employees. But a word of warning was in the air, reminding everyone that this could be the last year of living high on the hog.
