    A truck loaded with books about a criminal syndicate being stolen... it seems almost poetic, doesn’t it?

    Or, a darn good publicity stunt, perhaps?

    No matter how farfetched it might sound, it’s exactly what happened Saturday, April 28, at a truck yard in Elgin, Ill.

    A trailer, carrying 1,672 copies of “Cornbread Mafia,” written by Jim Higdon III, was stolen.

  • Two right-hand men, one small place

     

    For a small place, Washington County (population 11,717) lays claim to two big political figures. 

    Both serve as right-hand men for the governors of Kentucky and Indiana. 

    Earl Goode, current chief of staff for Indiana governor Mitch Daniels, and Mike Haydon, current chief of staff for Kentucky governor Steve Beshear, describe their jobs as anything but typical.

  • State provides funding toward emergency bridge replacement

    The following is a press release from the governor’s office.

    The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is providing $211,000 toward emergency replacement of a severely deteriorated bridge in Washington County.

    The bridge carries Tick Creek Road over the stream known locally as Pleasant Run.

  • Washington County ranked among state’s healthiest

     

    For the second year in a row, Washington County has been ranked as one of the top 10 healthiest counties in Kentucky. 

    The data is compiled into the County Health Rankings, which, according to their website, “measure the health of nearly all counties in the nation and rank them within states.”

    “The rankings are compiled using county-level measures from a variety of national and state data sources. These measures are standardized and combined using scientifically-informed weights,” according to the website.

  • Local indictment has implications in Tennessee


    An indictment in Washington County earlier this year had serious implications for a man in Knox County, Tenn.

    Burton Webb, listed on the indictment as residing in Athens, Tenn., was charged with theft by failure to make required disposition of property over $10,000.
    According to the Knoxville News-Sentinel in Knoxville, Tenn., Webb was recently appointed as the Knox County Finance Director.
    After Webb’s indictment was discovered, he was fired from the position.

  • Harlem Globetrotter passes away at 32


    On the morning of March 30, the 32-year-old  American Saddlebred Champion Harlem Globetrotter passed away.

    That morning, Harlem was led to his exercise paddock by Jesus Gonzalez, his long-time friend and caretaker of 30 years.
    As was his daily routine, the black stallion trotted to his favorite spot, rolled onto the soft ground scratching his back  and there he died peacefully.  
    At the age of two,   “Harlem” arrived at Kalarama Farm after being  purchased by Paul Hamilton.

    Former Kentucky governor, and past president of St. Catharine College, Martha Layne Collins was on the SCC campus last week to give a presentation during a Women’s History event.

    Collins talked about the challenges she faced as Kentucky’s first female governor and how the political climate has changed since she left office.

  • ‘American Pickers’ looking for Kentucky treasures


    One of television’s most popular shows is coming to Kentucky, and with the right tip, possibly even Washington County.

    The hosts of the popular History Channel show American Pickers -- Mike Wolfe and Frank Fritz -- are planning a road trip to Kentucky next week, but they’re still looking for places to visit.

  • SCC touts economic impact


    St. Catharine College President William Huston said when he arrived on campus in 1997, payroll for the 36 full time employees was $23,000 every two weeks.

    Now, 15 years later, payroll is nearly $300,000 every two weeks to compensate the roughly 150 full time and 50 part-time employees.
    Huston also said the net assets of the college, or the worth of the college, was $85,000 in 1997.
    “They had no buildings and no land,” he said. “What you saw was Lourdes Hall, and that had been depreciated out.”
