  • Commanders turn to small ball in 2013 to duplicate success

    Washington County baseball — 18-19 (15-4 in the 5th region) last season — has gotten their opponents’ attention in recent years, winning the last two 5th Region All-A tournament crowns and coming within a run of back-to-back 19th District titles last season.

    It won’t be the same WC team taking the field in 2013 with a core group of seniors departing since last year, but that doesn’t change expectations for coach Derek Schuler’s group.

  • FCCLA prepping for state

    On Feb. 16, 2013 Washington County High School FCCLA attended the Region 5 STAR Events. STAR (Students Taking Action for Recognition) events are individual and team competitions which allow students to showcase their leadership skills. Students compete in one of two divisions: Junior (7th-9th grade) and Senior (10th-12th grade). It was a clean sweep for the chapter as all won first place and have earned the right to compete at state competition on Mar. 25-27 at the Galt House Hotel in Louisville. This was the most from any school in the region.

    The search is on to fill a pair of vacancies on the Washington County Planning Commission and anyone wanting to help push WC in the right direction is encouraged to apply.

    Not much is required of anyone interested in the openings as far as prerequisites according to Washington County Planning Commissioner Buddy Parker, just that newcomers have a real desire to improve the county.

  • Commander College saving time, money

    With the Washington County Commander College program in its third year, local school officials recently assessed its impact on student development, and they found that the program is producing just the results they’d hoped for.

    “It has definitely been a great success and a wonderful opportunity for our students who have participated,” said Washington County High School Principal Paul Terrell. “These students will have had the opportunity to earn an associate degree while completing their high school requirements as well.”
