Kick Butts Day: RISE youth program spreads awareness of tobacco dangers (Photos)

It was Kick Butts Day in Washington County last Friday, and local youth celebrated by encouraging residents to kick the habit of using tobacco.

The Kick Butts program is a nationwide effort to spread awareness about the dangers of tobacco use, and RISE Coordinator Wilma Sorrell said it’s the kids themselves who spearhead the movement locally.

North Washington talk meet results

The members of the Best Sew-ers In Town 4-H Club will be modeling their completed outfits at the annual Washington/Marion Co. 4-H Fashion Revue on Monday, May 6. This year’s event will be held at the Marion County Extension Office beginning at 6 p.m. The public is invited to attend and admission is free to the event.

Wednesday night golf league May 8

The Wednesday night golf league at Lincoln Homestead is scheduled to start on Wednesday, May 8 at 4:15 p.m. There will be an organization meeting to discuss the rules and collect money, then the teams will play their nine-hole match.

You need to have a partner to participate in the league. Each player is responsible for their green fees.

Girls’ basketball hands out awards

The Washington County girls’ basketball team (16-14) received awards at their postseason banquet last week.

Varsity, junior varsity and freshman awards were handed out, with freshman Nyk Brizendine and senior Kenya Turner splitting MVP honors.

WC softball suffers first two district losses

The Washington County softball team (6-10) was undefeated in 19th District play (4-0) heading into last week, with two games in three nights against district opponents on deck.

The Commanderettes had already beaten Nelson County (4-15)—Thursday’s opponent— 11-1 at home earlier this month, but Tuesday’s matchup with Bethlehem (12-11) was the teams’ first of the year.

Shelton, Smith headed to inaugural KHSAA state fishing tournament on April 26-27

The Washington County fishing team took part in the Region 2 fishing tournament on April 7 at Taylorsville Lake. Michael Shelton and Thomas Smith (with boat captain Scott Sagrecy) advanced to the state tournament, which will be held on April 26 and 27. The team posted a top-ten finish, ninth out of 44 boats.
