  • 17 young ladies seek Junior Miss crown Saturday

    When the contestants of this year’s Washington County Junior Miss take the stage Saturday night, the group will be one of the largest ever to compete for the title. Seventeen young ladies will seek the 2010 Washington County Junior Miss crown at the WCHS gymnasium starting at 7 p.m.

    Tickets are on sale at all local banks for $7 each before the show. Tickets will also be available the night of the competition for $8 each.

  • 2009 Commander Football Camp

    Washington County High School was the scene last week for the 2009 Commander Football Camp. WCHS head football Mark Perry and his staff instructed area youths age 8-13 in the basic fundamentals of offense and defense. While game strategy was discussed, some emphasis was also placed on getting into shape and building strength and endurance.

  • County is home to certified farm markets

    Washington County is home to three of the 92 markets across the state that are members of the 2009 Kentucky Farm Bureau Certified Roadside Farm Market Program. The Washington County Certified Roadside Market members are: Flaggy Meadow Fiber Works & Sunshine Alpacas of Kentucky, Maple Hill Manor and St. Catherine Farm.   • Softball tourney benefits Relay

    The softball field at Burg Park got its share of action this past weekend as several local teams gathered for a tournament to benefit the Washington County Relay for Life.

    Finishing in first place was Buzzard Roost. Second place went to Sac and Sons Kentucky Wreckers. Rounding out the top three was Merchants Micken.

    With a sunny sky and a comfortable temperature, it was a perfect day to be out on the diamond raising money for Relay.

  • Grand jury indicts six

    Six people were indicted last week by a Washington County grand jury, and two of them were separate incidents, both involving the rape of a minor.

    Paul Mattingly, 38, of 152 Hill Top Street in Springfield, was charged with one count of rape 1st degree (Class A Felony) and one count of sex abuse 1st degree (Class C Felony).

    According to court records, Mattingly allegedly had sexual intercourse with and subjected a female less than 12 years old to sexual contact on or about March 3, 2009 in Washington County.

  • LL baseball regular season winds down

    As the last Little League baseball games are set to be played this Thursday, other leagues are just getting underway at Idle Hour Park in Springfield.

    The 11-12-year-old Reds captured the league championship with wins over the Red Sox and Mets last week, finishing with an 8-2 record over the second-place Mets, who finished 5-5.

    Things are still up for grabs in the 9-10-year-old league, where the Reds hold a one-game lead over the Cubs with two games remaining on each team’s schedule.

    The summer games

     One of my favorite parts of summer is getting outdoors, doing some grilling, and most of all, enjoying my favorite summer activities.

    One way to stay in shape or get some exercise is to simply toss a frisbee around a state park or setting up the lawn darts in the back yard.

    What? Did he say lawn darts? Yes, I miss lawn darts!

    Lynn: It's a boy!

    Sara and Kris Lynn of Thompson, Mo. announce the birth of their son on April 13, 2009 at Boone Hospital in Columbia, Mo.

    Daniel Logan weighed 7 pounds, 2 ounces and was 19 3/4 inches long.

  • Emerald ash borer found here

    Well, we knew for several years it was going to eventually make it to Kentucky and now it has!  The emerald ash borer has been found for the first time in Kentucky in a wood lot in Shelby County and a residential landscape in Jessamine County.  This has been confirmed by the state entomologist.

  • Bethlehem Volleyball Camp

    Bethlehem High School will host a developing skills volleyball camp for girls entering grades 6-8 June 13, 14 and 20.
