  • Target spot widespread in burley float beds

    The recent wet weather resulted in many cases of target spot on young burley tobacco plants in greenhouses across the state. With more wet conditions in the forecast, growers need to watch their seedlings closely for any sign of the disease in order to manage it if it does develop.  

    In terms of severity and how widespread it is, this is the worst case of target spot I’ve seen since I came here in 2005. Every year, we usually have some target spot, but this year we’re finding it in nearly every float bed we visit.

  • Moslemi wins 5th Region final, advances to state tournament

    Washington County sophomore Cyrus Moslemi has made quick work of his opponents this season, having lost only one game all year on his way to an undefeated season.

    His performance during the season earned him the second seed and a first round bye in the 5th Region tournament, which got underway at the University Courts in Elizabethtown last Monday.

  • Washington County splits two before heading to district

    The Washington County Commanders closed out the regular season with an 11-1 thumping of Adair County last Thursday.

    Before that, they fell 5-4 to Campbellsville on May 12. But that’s the way the season has rolled along for the Commanders.

  • Doctor saves child from flooded creek

    He says he didn’t do anything that anyone else wouldn’t have done in his place, but then again, no one else was in Dr. David Tank’s place Friday evening.

    Tank, a local chiropractor who lives in Campbellsville, is being called a hero after saving the life of 9-year-old Ashley Smith of Campbellsville, along with his own life, after the two were swept more than 40 yards by raging flood waters near Campbellsville Youth Soccer Park Friday.

  • Late-planted corn faces different set of insects

    Cool temperatures coupled with periods of rain have kept much of the state’s corn out of the ground. As producers hustle to compensate for lost planting time, they should be aware that late-planted corn could present a different insect scenario this year.

    The good news is the state’s late-planted corn is not likely to see increased problems with corn rootworm and is likely to see reduced wireworm damage.  However, several pests do not arrive until later in the season, and these pests could pose the greatest threat to yields.

  • Commanderettes go 3-3 heading into final week

    Last Tuesday, Washington County pitcher Kelly Hill no-hit the Marion County Lady Knights. But some costly errors allowed the Lady Knights to win 5-4 at Idle Hour Park.

    The Commanderettes got off to a 3-0 start through the first two innings, but errors plagued WC in the third, allowing Marion County to plate four on a series of passed balls.

    WC tied it up in the fifth on a pair of hits, but Marion took a 5-4 lead in the top of the sixth and held on for the win.

  • Burkhead new WC boys' hoops coach

    If you regularly follow sports in Washington County, chances are you know Russell Burkhead. And chances are you’re going to see a lot more of him, as he has been named the new boys’ head basketball coach at Washington County High School. WCHS Principal Leon Smith made the announcement Friday afternoon in the school’s library.

    Burkhead, a 1982 graduate of WCHS, has served as JV and freshman basketball coach under former head coach Paul Bodenhamer, as well as coaching freshman Commander baseball and youth league football and baseball at Idle Hour Park.

    More than 12,000 runners took part in the Kentucky Derby Festival Marathon and miniMarathon on April 24. Out of the thousands of runners taking part, two local residents laced up their shoes and hit the course for a good cause.

  • Commanders tame Tigers, beat Yellowjackets 12-2

    The Washington County Commanders are finding themselves in a tough spot. A 12-2 win over Bardstown in six innings last Tuesday improved their district record to 4-3, slightly ahead of 3-3 Nelson County.

    That sets up a first-round district tournament game against the Cardinals, who have beaten WC 14 out of their last 15 meetings. WC beat Nelson 10-2 on May 1.

    Commander pitcher Joseph Hamilton got the win and senior shortstop Joe Joe Simms went four-for-four.
