  • Harrodsburg couple killed in Saturday crash

    A two-vehicle accident in Washington County has left two people dead.

    Barbara Walker, 72, of Harrodsburg, and her husband, Martin Walker III, 72, also of Harrodsburg, both died after a collision on US 150 about six miles outside Springfield Saturday evening at approximately 6:30 p.m.

  • Patriots win three of five on the road

    The St. Catharine College Patriots are now 29-13 overall and have finished the Mid-South Conference season with a 9-9 mark. If Luther Bramblett’s club is to get to the coveted 30 victories, a milestone Bramblett has reached in six consecutive seasons after a 26-20 record in his first year at the helm, the Patriots will be relying on two factors.

  • Youth league sign-ups this Saturday

    Sign-ups for 2009 youth leagues will take place this Saturday, April 25 at Idle Hour Park from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

    Boys and girls ages 4-6 may sign-up for t-ball, boys and girls ages 7-8 may sign-up for coach pitch and girls age 9-12 can sign-up for the softball league.

    No phone registrations will be accepted, you must register in person.

    Each participant is required to pay league dues up-front and fill out a sign-up form and permission slip.

    The cost to play is $40 for one child, $70 for two children, $90 for three children and $110 for four children.

  • Rizer offers golf lessons as a team fundraiser

    Again this spring, St. Catharine College golf coach Joan Rizer will be offering lessons as a fundraiser for the Patriot men’s and women’s teams. The lessons will be given at Maywood Country Club. Rizer has won numerous amateur events in her career including five titles in the Kentucky State-Am. She is a member of the Kentucky Golf Association Hall of Fame.

  • Economy may get boost from batteries

    The local economy could be looking at a boost, and that boost could come from batteries.

    It will not be located in Springfield, but the news of a $600 million investment being made in Hardin County by the National Alliance for Advanced Transportation Batteries (NAATBat) could definitely mean a jolt of energy into the economy of Washington County, as well as surrounding communities.

    The Washington County Sheriff’s Office and the Springfield Police Department each have welcomed a new officer as Bill Hill and Nathan Phillips recently graduated from the Department of Criminal Justice Training course at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond.

  • St. Catharine golfers wrap-up season next week

    Just when most golfers are just working on getting their game in shape, the St. Catharine College golf teams will be completing the season. The final tournament for Joan Rizer’s men and women will be the Mid-South Conference tournament held Monday and Tuesday at Nevel Meade Golf Course in Prospect.

    Both the St. Catharine men and women played in two tournaments last week. Monday and Tuesday they were ate Cherry Blossom Golf Course in Georgetown and Saturday they played at Old Bridge in a tournament hosted by Centre College.

  • WC tennis on the winning track

    The Washington County tennis team continues to chug along. The WC boys took on Adair County on April 7, winning the overall match 3-2. There were no girls matches due to schedule conflicts.

    The Commanders played some pro sets due to weather and time constraints.

    In singles play, Cyrus Moslemi defeated Stephen Chafin in two sets (6-0, 6-0). Harrison Simms beat Jon Evans in two sets (6-1, 6-1). Darius Moslemi defeated Andrew Wooley 8-0.

  • Superintendent gets positive review from board

    He’s been on the job for nine months now, but it may seem like more than that for Robert Stafford, superintendent of Washington County Schools.

    Stafford came on board as the new superintendent of Washington County just before the current school year started, and the school board members met last Tuesday night for his formative evaluation.

    Stafford got good marks from the board, and the members pointed out what they were pleased with about his service.
