    Members of the Washington County Heartland Youth Coalition were out kicking butts and taking names Saturday morning as part of Kick Butts Day 2009. It was a single-day event designed to promote smoking cessation along with drug and alcohol abuse prevention.

  • Commanders take three of four

    This past weekend, the Washington County Commanders swept the competition at the Chandler Classic to win the tourney with a 9-3 first round win over Simon Kenton and then pummeling Burgin 15-7 for the title.

    It was a return to form for the WC squad as they won three of their last four to improve to 6-5 on the season.

  • Weeding time: Cool, wet weather slows us down

    If you have been trying to garden lately, you know that the cool wet spring so far is slowing us down as well as our plants.  Don’t complain though. Just as easy as the rains are coming now, it could soon stop for a long hot summer, so let’s just enjoy the rain while we have it.  Who knows, we might even get rain for the entire growing season!

  • From mid-season call up to opening day starter

    Daniel Murphy, grandson of Springfield resident Ann Murphy, recently celebrated his 24th birthday on April 1. But you could say he didn’t celebrate until he smacked his first home run of the season on Opening Day against the Reds in Cincinnati.

    He also added an RBI on a bases-loaded fielder’s choice that knocked in the second and deciding run for the Mets as they beat the Reds 2-1 on April 6.

  • Reaching for a win

    “It’s the little things.” You hear that cliché all the time, but for the Washington County Commanderettes, it happens to be true. Little things like missing a tag or cut-off here and there are adding up to big trouble for ladies.

    The team is off to an 0-4 start after dropping home games against Campbellsville and being no-hit by Nelson County last week.

  • Patriots baseball 5-2 for the week

    The St. Catharine College Patriots played seven baseball games last week, five of those being Mid-South Conference games. And when the dust had settled, Luther Bramblett found his team with a 5-2 overall record for the week with a 4-1 slate in conference play.

  • Bat Pats still number one

    For the second consecutive week the St. Catharine College baseball and softball teams are ranked number one nationally in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association. With a total of 222 points in the poll the baseball Patriots are 11 points ahead of Columbia Union College. The softball team’s first place lead was narrowed but they still hold a first place ranking with 156 points to defending national champion St. Mary of the Woods’ who has 149 points.

  • St. Catharine golfers finish 16th at Crooked Creek

    In a tournament hosted by the University of the Cumberlands last Monday and Tuesday at Crooked Creek Golf Course, the St. Catharine College men’s team finished 16th in the 20 team field. The Patriots had a 36-hole total of 648 (320-328). Malone College won the tournament with a 585 total.

    Hood: It's a girl!

    Brian and Miranda Hood of Mt. Washington announce the birth of their daughter on Jan. 28, 2009 at 4:48 a.m. at Norton Suburban Hospital in Louisville.

    Taylor Nicole weighed 7 pounds, 5 ounces and was 20 inches in length.

    Borders: It's a boy!

    Dana and Paul Borders of Springfield announce the birth of their son at 11:29 a.m. on March 12, 2009 at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville.

  • Unemployment rate up in 2008

    Annual unemployment rates were higher in 110 Kentucky counties in 2008 than in 2007, while 10 counties were lower, according to the Kentucky Office of Employment and Training in the Kentucky Education and Workforce Development Cabinet.

    In 2008, five Kentucky counties had an annual jobless rate at or above 10 percent compared to three counties that recorded double-digit rates in 2007.
